The city centre overflows with 16th and 17th century buildings, manor-houses and religious edifices that you will be able to admire during your visits. The famous ‘Cours Mirabeau’ offers magnificent views of the city’s most enchanting historic façades.

The city of Aix-en-Provence has a number of museums in which you will be able to discover the riches of the city’s artistic heritage. These include the Granet museum, the tapestry museum, the Vasarely foundation, the Hôtel de Caumont museum, all of which house wonderful collections of artworks, paintings and sculptures.

Aix-en-Provence : a SPA town

In antiquity Aix-en-Provence was a spa town, Aquae Sextiae, reputed for its hot springs which remain active to this day. You will be able to enjoy genuine moments of well-being and relaxation here.

The Sextius Spa is located in the heart of the city and offers treatments using mineral spring water in a setting which has preserved the vestiges of the original Roman spa.

You can easily get there from Château Grimaldi by bus or car for a welcome relaxing moment during your holiday.

You will be able to discover the culinary wealth of the region and the local specialities: pistou soup, daube provençale, pieds paquets and aïoli. You will love the local colour of the region’s famous dishes and gastronomic delights. In Marseille you can also discover the world-famous bouillabaisse.

Aix-en-Provence’s most famous culinary speciality is in fact a sweet: the ‘calisson d’Aix’. Calissons are made with almond paste and melon, and have been a local speciality since the 17th century.

Culture in the heart of Provence

The region is host to numerous annual cultural events, mainly centred on music and the arts.

One of the most famous is the International Opera Festival which has been held in Aix-en-Provence since the end of the second World War. This reputed international music festival was named Best Opera Festival at the 2014 International Opera Awards.

The Grand Théâtre de Provence is also located in Aix-en-Provence and regularly hosts magnificent ballet and contemporary dance performances along with wonderful classical music concerts.

And then there is the Roque d’Anthéron International Piano Festival which has built up a fine reputation for classical, baroque and jazz music over its 30 years of existence.

Nearby, Avignon hosts a theatre festival, the Festival d’Avignon in July every year. 

In Arles, another Provencal town, the Rencontres d’Arles, a world-famous photography festival takes place every summer.
